eight little ducks went swimming one day

I have spent most of last week and the weekend painting Christmas trees and decorations, so much so that I have an aching hand.
I finished the project this afternoon which left time for a walk down the canal. We spotted a mother mallard and her twelve ducklings, now of course I did not have time to paint them, so here is one I did earlier. Maybe the same mummy duck, or more probably one of the ducklings has matured to become a mummy herself?

  1. How very lovely. You've captured the serene beauty of a mother leading her younglings. I love your work!

I envy you your walk today--it is raining and cold, and I am stuck in the office. (grin)

Visiting your blog is a NICE way to procrastinate!

  4. Hi - how adorable. We had a mummy duck nest in our urban garden last year - she had 8 babies. By the time they had grown to full size it was like being in some awful Hitchcockian movie living here!

  5. It's sweet, Valerie.

If you're like me, painting Christmas, it makes you forget what the real date is! ;-)

We're back to cold weather again. Where oh where is spring! I think it went to England.

  6. This is so sweet Valerie! It's that time of year again. Baby ducks and bluebells.
I loved your previous post with the divine bluebell woodland. Makes my garden bluebells look very paltry indeed!

  8. I realized today that Christmas is not all that far away for those of us who like to make our presents!! How does time go so fast???

There are ducks galore around the lake not far from us. Lots of waddling babies!

I am using your beautiful bluebell woodland path as my current screen saver. I love it!

  9. Ducks and ducklings (and with the cygnets still to come in a few weeks) - what a great time of year, despite the uncertain weather.

  10. A couple of months ago I came across two mallard ducks and a drake clambering over rocks, down to the sea and setting out across the water. This is a much more familiar setting for them!

  11. Glad you were able to take some time out from your Christmas work. The illustration of the duck and ducklings is so sweet - it reminds me of where I used to live before we came to Stoke - I worked near a river and the traffic would often come to a stand still whilst a mother duck led her little ones across the road and into the gardens where there was a pond.

  13. It seems so strange to be working on Christmas paintings this time of year...but I guess that's the life of an artist. Love the duck family.

  14. I always like to see a mama duck giving swimming lessons to her youngsters. Beautiful to see that family gliding along in your painting.

I'm glad that you could take a break from Christmas prep to enjoy some of this beautiful current season before it slips away.

  19. Bluebells in woodland...bliss. Love the mother and ducklings. Spring is such a renewing time of year when all things are possible. I just wish it would last longer. Three months is not enough.
